About Alvelyn
Alvelyn Sanders Swafford is a published author, 20-year minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and award-winning independent filmmaker whose documentary work, "Foot Soldiers: Class of 1964" is featured on PBS.org. She is a former reporter for WABE 90.1 FM (Atlanta’s NPR station), where she received an award from the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists (AABJ), and recognition from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for her reporting. She is former freelance faith reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and book reviewer for the faith section of Black Issues Book Review magazine, and served as a special research assistant to the provost at Emory University.
Her writing has appeared in Essence, Upscale Magazine, The Christian Recorder, and Northwestern (University) magazine. She is an alumna of the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation Writers Week and was one of only 15 writers selected for the inaugural Harvard University Radcliffe Institute Master Class in Memoir Writing in 2000. She was also chosen as one of 20 participants nationwide for the annual Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Faculty Seminar (The Emmys).
Alvelyn is the author of three books, Lord, Have Mercy: 5 Go-To Prayers When You Need to Pray, But Don’t Know What to Say and the digital books, Shake It Off, Show Up & Preach!: 10 Lessons for New Pastors and Write It Loud! 365 Daily Writing Sparks to Join the Tradition of Black Storytelling. She also served as editor for Weapons of Mass Production by Carlton Reed, provided copy writing and editing services for non-profit organizations, and taught writing and literature in higher education for several years. She is married to Reverend Raymond Swafford.
